New Motera Cricket Stadium.

The construction of the world’s largest cricket stadium, which will have a seating capacity of over 1 lakh, at Motera in Ahmedabad is underway.

The Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) has been working on it since January 2017 and on Sunday, Parimal Nathwani, the vice-president of the GCA shared an update on the progress.

One of the largest construction company in India, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has been given the responsibility of constructing the stadium. The expected construction cost of the stadium will be around Rs 700 crore and when it is ready for a game of cricket, the ground will be able to host 1.10 lakh fans. With that, it will take the crown for the largest capacity beating the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Melbourne, Australia.

“The construction work is going on in full swing as per the schedule and we expect the stadium to be ready within the stipulated time period. The stadium will add one more attraction to Ahmedabad,” Nathwani had said.

The ground is spread over approximately 63 acres of land. Along with the playing area, it will have three practice grounds and an indoor cricket academy, an Olympic-size swimming pool and a Clubhouse.

The old Motera stadium in Ahmedabad named after Sardar Patel has hosted 12 Tests, 23 ODIs and 1 T20I. It had a capacity of 54,000 and the new stadium with double the capacity is expected to be ready in 2019.

Nathwani, very recently, tweeted out pictures of the construction site, in which he stated this is the dream project of the state cricket board and after its completion, it will become a symbol of pride for the nation.
